Join Orleans Recreation for this new and improved Learn to Swim program!

Certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors at Pilgrim Lake will run these classes.

Each level will focus on water safety while progressively building on basic swimming skills for each level of swimmer. With this smaller class size and qualified instruction model of teaching, this improved program will allow for more individualized instruction that will result in your child making noticeable progress over the 2-week program with THE BEST SAFETY PRACTICES IN PLACE.
 
*Please note that in the best interest of our staff and participants and to stay within staffing ratios, registrations will not be accepted on a daily or weekly pro-rated basis. All participants must sign up for a 2-week option. 

REGISTRATION FOR ORLEANS RESIDENTS OPENS ON APRIL 1ST FOR NON-RESIDENTS APRIL 28TH. 

Please note classes will meet Monday-Friday for a two-week session: 

Session 1: Jul 1 - Jul 12 - (Total of 9 classes), No class on Jul 4th
            Cost: $25 Resident $90 Non-resident 

Session 2: Jul 15 - Jul 26 - (total of 10 classes)
             Cost: $30 Resident   $105 Non-resident 

Session 3: Jul 29- Aug 9 - (total of 10 Classes) 
             Cost: $30 Resident  $105 Non-Resident
  
No credits or refunds will be issued for canceled lessons. Please note: make-up classes will NOT be offered for cancellations due to unsafe swimming conditions (E.g., weather). Classes will be held in the rain.

LEVEL 1: Introduction to Water Skills ages 3 & up
Orient participants to the aquatic environment and help them gain basic aquatic skills. This course is designed to help the non-swimmer feel comfortable in the water and enjoy the water safely. We will introduce bubble blowing, kicking with support, basic arm movements, and floating with support. Emphasis will be on having fun while learning the basics. Help participants begin to develop positive attitudes and safe practices around water.

* No skill prerequisites - Must be 3 years & up
 
LEVEL 2: Fundamental Aquatics Skills
Build on basic aquatic skills and water safety skills and concepts. Children will be working on front and back floats, blowing bubbles, kicking, and introducing the front crawl. The objective of the class is to give students success with swimming. Children must be able to comfortably put their faces in the water for a three-second count.

* Prerequisites: Successful demonstration of the Learn to Swim Level 1 exit skills learned in Level 1 assessment

LEVEL 3: Stroke Development
Build on skills learned in levels 1 and 2 to help participants achieve basic water competency in a pond environment. Students are introduced to the elementary backstroke and treading water. They also learn to coordinate and improve the front crawl and backstroke. Some jumping into the water will be introduced.

* Prerequisites: Successful demonstration of the learn to swim Level 2 exit skills assessment

Level 4: Stroke Improvement
Improve participants' proficiency in performing the swimming strokes introduced in Level 3. Students work on improving their strokes and increasing their endurance. We will review the elementary backstroke, front crawl, back crawl, treading water, and shallow diving. The instructor will introduce breaststroke, sidestroke, and rhythmic breathing.

* Prerequisites: Successful demonstration of the Learn to Swim Level 3 exit skills assessment

LEVEL 5: Stroke Refinement
Help participants refine their performance of all six swimming strokes. This class is designed for advanced swimmers looking to improve their strokes: front crawl, bilateral breathing, back crawl with body roll, breaststroke using glides, side stroke with an inverted kick, and other fun advanced skills.

* Prerequisites: Successful demonstration of the Learn to Swim Level 4 exit skills

LEVEL 6: Endurance
This class is for advanced swimmers who have passed Level 5. It endorses swimming and increasing distances every day. During the program, an endurance swimming test will be given.


*Please note that the Orleans Recreation Department prioritizes the health and safety of each participant. A Lifeguard will be present during instruction to monitor the swim lesson area only. All other beachgoers, swimmers, and bathers are "Swim At Your Own Risk." Parents are responsible for other children not enrolled in the program.
